COLUMBUS – Centerville was defeated 34-17 by Indianapolis Cathedral in the final game of the Kirk Herbstreit Football Classic on Monday, Sept. 5 at Ohio State University.
The loss drops the Elks to 0-2; Cathedral, and 8-time multiple Indiana state champion, improves to 1-2.
4th Q, 1:22: Cathedral’s Gino Gillum runs 14 yards for yet another Cathedral TD; Jack Fleck kicks. Ind. Cathedral 34, Centerville 17.
4th Q, 4:01: Elks LB Mike Thomas blocked a punt deep in Cathedral territory and Josh Carlton recovered in the end zone for a TD; Josh Kaczala kick. Ind. Cathedral 27, Centerville 17. Cathedral recovers onside kick.
4th Q, 7:11: Wyatt Wood 3-yard out for TD in left corner of EZ; Jack Fleck kick. Ind. Cathedral 27, Centerville 10.
3rd Q, 8:10: Big TE Anthony Corsaro beat strong safety Jay Mastin to the end zone with an over-the-shoulder catch for his second TD on Cathedral’s opening drive of the second half. Kick failed. Ind. Capped a clutch 71-yard drive that began with 7:03 left in the half. Cathedral 20, Centerville 10.
End of 1st half: Centerville kicker Jason Kaczala drilled a 26-yard FG as time expired to pull the Elks within four at halftime. Ind. Cathedral 14, Centerville 10.
2nd Q, 7:03: Kyle Vasillo snared a 23-yard scoring strike from QB Corye Babb on the right side of the end zone for Cathedral’s 2nd score. The short drive was set up on Centerville’s 25 when Elks QB Janson Matthews fumbled. Ind. Cathedral 14, Centerville 6.
2nd Q, 11:37: Lumbering TE Anthony Corsaro slipped behind the Elks defense for a 79-yard TD catch from QB Corey Babb on the ensuing possession. Centerville 7, Ind. Cathedral 7.
2nd Q, 11:56: Centerville QB Janson Matthews sneaks in from 2 yards for the game’s first score. Jason Kaczala kick. Centerville 7, Ind. Cathedral 0.
End of 1st Q: No score; Cathedral stalled twice deep in Centerville territory.
