Both AJ and Ryan Hawk had outstanding football careers at Centerville High School. Ryan holds records for career passing yards (5,013) and single season passing yards (1,557); he was also the All-Ohio First Team Quarterback his senior year. Ryan’s younger brother, AJ, continued the Hawk legacy and was a two-time All State player in high school before going to The Ohio State University where he won the the 2002 National Championship and the 2005 Lombardi Award. AJ currently plays for the Green Bay Packers who won Super Bowl XLV this year.
Sonny Unger was a football player and a 1963 graduate of Centerville High School. Shortly after graduation, Sonny joined the army and was killed while serving in Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts and an Oak Leaf Cluster for his heroic actions.
In 1967, the Sonny Unger Memorial Scholarship Foundation was established. Every year, scholarship money is awarded to two senior football players. These players are deemed to have made a valuable playing contribution to the team, posess and exhibit outstanding character, have been leaders among their teammates, and role models for younger players.
